GFHRD Responds to Growing Violence
Since the introduction of the so-called “Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill,” Ghana has witnessed a disturbing surge in violence, intimidation, and hate-motivated attacks targeting members of the LGBTQ+ community, their advocates, and human rights defenders. What began as a national policy debate has tragically turned into a campaign of fear—driven by misinformation and intolerance. Many people have suffered physical assaults, social ostracism, and psychological trauma, with some fleeing the country to save their lives, while others are forced to live in hiding under degrading and inhumane conditions.
Members of the Ghana Foundation for Human Rights and Dignity (GFHRD) have not been spared these persecutions. The most recent incident involves Mr. Bright Ntoaduro, the Foundation’s Communication Officer for the Ashanti East District, who was violently attacked for expressing his views during a public discussion on the bill. Mr. Ntoaduro, known for his tireless work assisting survivors of community‑based violence with access to medical care, psychotherapy, and legal representation, was hospitalized with severe injuries following the assault.
His dedication to the cause of justice and dignity exemplifies the courage of Ghanaian activists who continue to speak truth to power despite grave personal risks. GFHRD strongly condemns the barbaric attack on Mr. Ntoaduro and the continuing wave of hostility engulfing inclusive‑rights advocates across the nation. Freedom of speech and expression remain non‑negotiable constitutional guarantees, and no citizen should fear violence for contributing to public discourse. We call on law enforcement authorities to investigate these violent incidents promptly and bring perpetrators to justice. We further urge the media, civil society, and community leaders to encourage tolerance and protect all individuals, regardless of identity or belief, from persecution.
As an organization committed to upholding Ghana’s constitutional and international human‑rights obligations, GFHRD renews its call for empathy, dialogue, and mutual respect. A nation that silences its advocates silences its conscience.
